The Bendigo diggings were originally called Castleton later changed to Sandhurst.
The name was later changed again to Bendigo to honour a bare knuckle prize fighter.
Early on in the diggings, gold was recovered in alluvial gravels close to the surface, and from quartz reefs that surfaced.
Much more gold was recovered from deep lead mines later on than from all the alluvial gravels.
Bendigo was the richest Goldfield in the Golden Triangle area.
