Castlemaine was originally called Forest Creek.
The riches that were to be won from the area surrounding what is now know as Castlemaine came from alluvial gravels.
The nuggets were so big in the creek bed that the first fossickers to find the area just picked up the larger ones and left behind the smaller ones.
Once all the easier gold had been won out the miners turned their attention to deep reef mining.
The Quartz reefs in the area are mainly embedded in Sandstone.
